The UIDAI, the Unique Identification Authority of India, issues a 12 digit identification number for all the individuals living in the country.

The number is given to the residents once they give their biometrics and demographic details at the different government Aadhar card enrollment centers.

Dr. Manmohan Singh launched this program in the year 2009, and Nandan Nilekani gave the name for this program Aadhar in the year 2010.

The word Aadhar means base or foundation in Hindi.
